"If you are not an immigrant or did not apply for a Social Security number on your immigrant visa application, you must have your papers from DHS showing your U.S. immigration status and authorization to work in the United States. Then you should apply for a Social Security number and card by visiting an office. We recommend you wait 10 days after arriving in the United States (or changing status) to apply for a Social Security number. This will make it easier for us to verify your DHS documents online, which will speed processing of your Social Security number application."

What if one already has a SS card but has the restriction of NOT VALID FOR EMPLOYMENT?

Im assuming, and correct me if Im wrong, that since one already has a card/number and exists in the system, then should one wait the 10 day period?

After all, all one needs is the new card with the same #, just the NOT VALID FOR EMPLOYMENT restriction, lifted...

Any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated...

You are changing your immigration status, therefore you still need to wait because those changes need to be reflected in their database(s). Although those who already have a SSN will only see a change of legend (the restrictions) on their new cards, it's the internal changes in their systems which are important. Remember that not all social security number holders qualify for the same federal benefits, this is why it's important to go (or not go XD) to the SS office if your immigration status changes.

tl;dr: Yes, you still need to wait 10 calendar days to get a new card but you can use your existing card to apply for jobs or a driver's license.

So is anyone out there who didn't wait the 10 days and has received their SS card already?

That's great fucking news! I wonder why that is, some offices tell you to wait it out and some tell you that they have to verify it and it will take some time. Like they're not all using the same fuc*ing database

I think some offices have more assholes than others..

I feel that 10 days is a long wait for their database to be updated, Im basing this on my timeline. I got approved on 10/9, EAD was sent in mail 10/10 and I received my EAD card yesterday, 10/12...process seems to be working faster than I envisioned...

Or perhaps its my anxiousness to get this whole process over with, including SS card and DL.

I didnt wait the 10 days. I went to the SSO the same day that I got my EAD in the mail. I think I just got lucky with the SS location that i went to. They were all very nice and helpful . Check out my timeline.
