How long should the ID/DL expiration be in California?

It was my understanding that ID/DLs were suppose to last the term of legal presence(2 years) but I just received my ID from the DMV(california) and it has an expiration date in 2018. I'm ecstatic that this is the case, but is it the same for everyone or am I an exception?

Ive heard of 2 other instances where the expiration date is 2018. Still not sure if this will be the case for everyone.
