yes you need to show it to them. on the application there is a section for you to write the information of your out of state DL. if you have a DL already you dont have to take the behind the wheel test again, just the written.

Still haven't gotten my license. I took the test on October 12th. I talked to a DMV lady three days ago, and said that it's still pending. She said that it takes up to 6 weeks for Sacramento to verify my legal presence here. I like how she mentioned that specifically. Makes me think I am getting the dreaded 2 year DL. Can I do anything about it?

I feel like the SSA system updates every Monday so maybe that's why yours wasn't approved on the spot

So psyched! Can't wait till I get my EAD via mail and then apply for that SSN...

Then get the number and then go to the DMV!

Such a long list of things to do, but I'm sooooooooooooo excited!

CA DL are issued for 5 years and ID for 6. for all of us. so dont be scared that you will get anything less. ive been looking everywhere to try to find out how we could all get the normal exp date and there is nothing anyone is doing special. i realized that because both of my parents are permanent residents and when they applied for their DL they used the work permit that they sent them. that work permit expires 1 year after being issued. so when they applied for their Social they got one like ours that says "valid for employment only" then they went to the DMV and applied for their DL while they were still "illegal" and they were issued the normal exp date. so DONT WORRY. if you get a DL it will exp 5 years from your bday and ID 6 years from your bday.

I am going to my local Social Security office tomorrow to get my SS card for the first time. Does anyone know if I can go to the DMV right after I go to the SS office so I can apply for my CA ID? Or do I need to wait to get my SS card in the mail?

it takes about two weeks to receive your ss card after you apply. however you can get a print out of your number a day or two after you apply and then with that print out you can go to the dmv and get your id/dl
