Advantages:
- All the taxes you paid into the system using your ITIN will actually be transferred under your social security fund. You will able to get that money back when you retire.
- Your credit history (if you have any) will be carried over, so that way you are not starting with zero credit.
- You are required to rescind your ITIN by law, so if you do it you are obeying the law.

Disadvantage:
- If you have horrible credit history or owe a hefty amount of taxes, you might not want to transfer that over to your SSN. However, it is illegal to keep both an ITIN and SSN.

I'm sure there are a few on both sides, but you are required to turn over your ITIN once you get your SSN because you won't be using ITIN for tax purposes anymore. So regardless, the switch has to be made.

I'm wondering if I should claim my taxes from my "special" social I used? I did however claimed a lot of ppl to get a lot of money back....anyone know who I can ask about this? It might be beneficial for retirement purposes and hey I might get a refund but I'm also wondering if you admitting you used a fake social would be considered a detrimental to your case?

This may sound stupid but how do we go about merging these numbers? I already have my social and I have been trying to do this but don't know where to start

^^

You have to contact IRS and let them know about your SSN. I think you're supposed to send them a copy of your SSN card, and a copy of your ITIN notice when you got it, but the address you send it to depends on where you live. Call IRS and ask them directly about it.

I wonder if they have the information on where you're suppose to send it online. I'm in CA.
