So, I have tried to apply for wellsfargo college credit card, but I got denied because the social security has restrictions on it and wellsfargo don't accept the ones that are issued with "valid only for work " I also tried applying for kohls credit card and I got denied. I don't have any credit history though. What are some cards that I can start with

The part about being "valid for work only with DHS authorization" is not the problem. Even you had previously obtained credit cards using that SSN, you could continue to do so.

The problem is that most credit cards are no longer being issued to anyone using a SSN that has not previously been used to obtain a credit card. The major exception is "secured credit cards". If you wish to get a credit card using that SSN, you can do so, but only in the following way:

1. Get a secured credit card using that SSN.
2. Wait a sufficient period of time so that a credit report run for that SSN will show that you have established credit history.
3. Apply for the credit card that you actually want.

If you attempt to get the card that you want first, then you will probably be denied.

Yea, I think it's due more to credit history. I was able to get several credit cards with an ITIN so I really doubt that a SSN would give you a problem.

The card is not restricted. The only restricted ssn is "for banking only". It's your credit not ssn. I've had an amex for years with an ead...

You got denied because you have no credit or bad credit not because your ssn is 'restricted'. The SSN is only restricted to get Hired, because that is am indicator that you need to provide an EAD to be able to work.

LOL. They thought it read 'only valid for work and only with DHS authorization.' Whoever processed it was clearly not familiar with that type of SSN. Try a credit union.
