Your best best is starting with something small and lightweight. Unfortunately you won't really know what you like until you get on a bike. In CA, you can take your permit test after you receive your regular DL. It'll give you a year to ride (limited of course). There is a "behind the bar" test that you have to take at the dmv to get the full license. It's just a simple course they make you ride. But from what I hear it's a pain in the ass and the instructors are strict.

Fortunately, in CA, you can go to a Motorcycle Safety Course and upon completion of the course, you will get your full license. You just have to take your certificate back to the dmv. It does cost like $200 or so. But what you learn in that course is worth way more than that. Especially if you've never ridden before. I highly suggest you take it.
