Hi guys, I currently pay about $10,000 in college expenses all from my pocket, just about what I make working all summer long and vacation days, $0 financial aid and $0 scholarships. Do any of you know if any of that money is refundable? I just got a social security card last week and I will start working soon and I'm planning on filing taxes this spring.

I believe you should be able to claim those expenses on 2011, although don't take my advice for sure! Speaking from my experience. For example, I worked through my undergrad years, 2006-2010. You should be able to download or be mailed a form, 1098-T. It states the tuition you paid for the year. You input that info into your taxes and it can help give you a nice chunk back, but it also depends on your income as well. I avged about $2500 back each year from federal, but that just went back to pay for tuition lol.

Depends, do you support yourself or does someone else support you and most importantly what's your age?

many folks on here seem to shy away when it comes to answering anything that has to do with taxes. The question is, is it because mny ppl dont know bout taxes or they simply dont pay taxes at all?

is it true that u have to be a permanent resident to claim back taxes w/ 1098-T? or that u were working? what if my tuition $ came from over seas, can i still claim previous 1098-T taxes ?

I guess it's time for us to start informing ourselves. Have you been doing your taxes? Ask whoever does your taxes. U can go back and claim any $ for 3yrs. We did that on Saturday and we're going to get $1700 back

What I've seen is it's both although like I already said everyone pays taxes. Even when people do happen to file a tax return many don't understand what it says on there or what it means. I blame that on the person preparing the return because in this country in order to be a paid tax preparer you don't even need to have any sort of accounting experience much less a CPA license. People if you qualify go on the IRS website and look for VITA programs around your area they will help you and explain to you what every single thing on your tax return means for free! I know people tend to look the other way when something is free but this really is worth the try.

No you don't. No irregardless of status I know some colleges don't even issue one. The college I attend says they won't issue me one unless I give them my SSN which at them moment I don't even have. IRS doesn't care where the money comes from as long as you qualify for American Opportunity Credit, Education expenses, or Lifetime Learning Credit. Now what could happen is you could be unable to claim that credit even though you paid for the tuition.

you can claim it, as long as you are not somebody else's dependent. Then they prob will want to claim it. You get about $1000 fro education credits. Oh and we are considered resident aliens for tax purposes.

No dude it's not if they want to claim it's just the way tax law works. I remember some clients not liking that and getting mad at their own parents when it's not the parent's fault.
