So a potential employer called me today letting me know that I might have made a mistake on my application because my social security number should have been a certain number, which happens to be the number I had been using before (it was a fake). I have no idea how they got that number, since I never used it for credit related purposes, only work. Anyone have any ideas? I just told them that that was my ITIN number and that that probably occurred because I had just gotten my SS number.

Just tell him that your SS# was updated and give them a print out of your new number.

so how did the employer get a hold of your fake ssn? Did you give him consent in the application to verify your identity and work history with previous employers?

let us know...

That's because the company they used to run your background also searched for your credit profile. Your credit file is very easy to obtain. Even if you provide a different social, the credit bureau can provide results based on your name, birth date and addresa(current or previous).

The explanation you gave them was perfect. Make sure you contact all your creditors as well as the 3 bureaus to update your info.

They never contacted me back, so I think it should be ok. I might try emailing them in a bit just to make sure.

This is the email I just received:

Hi ********,

Thank you for following up. I sent a message to the team and they seem to think everything should be fine for you. If I hear of anything otherwise, I’ll let you know.

I hope you had a nice holiday and break!
