My passport and id have both last names so I would want my ead to have both. But I actually like my maternal name.

Nope, not everyone. I like having both, part of my identify. I actually dislike having only one, I wish I could always use both but it's kind of hard here, they're too used to people having only one.

I just don't like the problems it causes. people don't know what name to use . I used to get mail from the bank Ms.(insert maternal last name here). its just annoying and it turns into a matching game.

You can do that?

Marco:

I received your PM, but it is better if I answer here in case others have the same question.

To request a legal name change you need to look up the requirements in your state. Where I reside I had to send a form to the local probate court in my district. After a few days I received a notice with the date of my court hearing. They did ask for my ID and SSN thus I would apply after you have obtain those documents.

My sister's card has both last names, my 2 approvals only have dad 's last name so I'm guessing my card will as well.

If it's unimportant, I don't really care, letters in the mail are usually junk anyway. I always clarify to places that are important that my last names are two, but if they have a problem (for example I remember trying to get a library card and they couldn't put both of them bc of the computer system), I just used my paternal last name.

But legal documents, yes, I always try to use both. I've actually been meaning to get my diplomas changed because they only have my paternal last name
