So I got my SS card on Oct 31 and have been trying to get a credit card. First I went to bank of america where ive had my savings and checking account since 2007. The banker asked me if I had a job and I said no, but that I was a full time student. He then told me that because I had no income I would probably not get accepted, even for a secured card which is what I wanted. He said I would need a cosigner, so I just dropped it and left. Came home and read through the credit cards thread and decided to apply for the secured card at Capital One since most people suggested that one and since everyone usually gets approved. However: I was instantly denied!
So my question is how have you guys been getting credit cards so quickly and easily?
what should I do? I am scared to apply to a bunch of places and ruin my non-existent credit with all of these denials.

If you don't have a source of income they wouldn't give you a credit card. how do you expect to pay your balances if you don't have income?

Well at bank of america I have a pretty good savings account, so I thought they'd take that into consideration.
And at Capital One, they didnt ask if I was currently employed, but rather how much income I had during the year. And since I had a job until not too long ago, i put down how much I've made this year. And still got a denial.....

I'm not condoning this but you are aware that they don't verify your income. They don't call your employers or anything. I'm not telling you to outright lie about where you work and how much you earn but I actually may have embellished the amounts slightly. The point is I know I'm capable of using the card responsibly and paying them off fully each month. Something to consider IF and only IF you know what a credit card is and are ready to use it responsibly and not just to buy random things you desire without any consequences in mind.

Yes I am very responsible with my money and I honestly dont need a credit card because I really only buy what I have money for. But I do need credit, since everything nowadays revolves around credit. I want to buy a car and i have anough money in cash to pay for it, but I'd rather finance it for about a year just so that I can build this silly credit....
I never applied at bank of america. when the banker told me I would need a cosigner I just told him to forget about it.
But at Capital one I put down that my income was 15k, since it wasnt for the whole year. Too little maybe, and thats why they denied me? should I try again?

No. First get a job. You go to school full time? Don't apply for more cards. You have gotten your answer. The one that just denied you will be on your credit report for like two years. I've made this mistake before unfortunately.

Yes I go to school full time, although I didnt put that down on my application to Capital One. Im just trying to understand the reason for the denial, was the income I put down too low?

I'm not a credit analyst or anything but it could be a combination of income and the fact that you have insufficient credit history. You'll most likely get some sort of letter in the mail explaining the reason of denial. I suggest you buckle down and open some utility accounts with your new social for your home perhaps. Also make sure the bank has your account under your new SSN. Now Capital One has you in the system. After some time, they will send you a "pre-approved" offer and that will guarantee you approval when you apply. I was in same situation. Cap One kept denying me with ITIN and one day I just received an offer in the mail.

Awesome, thanks for your help. I am just frustrated because all Im asking for is a SECURED credit card, and even that is being denied! But I will follow your advice and wait a little longer. I guess I won't be financing my car anytime soon
