Hey follow dreamers, I need your advice!!!
I been working for a company for 4 years using a made-up ssn. I never had problems until today. Corporate office is requesting my employer to verify my ssn because there is an error (after four years of employment).

She knows my situation and she is telling me to give them my new ssn. However, she does not want me quit since I am her assistant, and if I quit she is pretty much by herself. However, it seems that corporate caught me using a fake ssn.

What do you guys think???? Should I give them the new ssn???? Would I get fraud charges???? Should I quit and look for another job????

Why wouldn't you give them your new ssn? It doesn't seem like you have a choice, if you don't give it they fire you, what have you got to lose? And no you won't get fraud charges.

Do you remember what you used to fill out your I-9 in the beginning? if you didn't show a fake ssn as ID, I think you have nothing to worry about, but if you did, that's another story.

You could say your SSN changed for some reason.

You should be fine, they might even let you stay, unless they fire you on the grounds that you lied on your I-9 when you first applied.

They could hit you up with fraud or misrepresentation then, if they really wanted to mess you up. The danger lies on the documents you provided. A GC holder would not need a work permit at all and there is no situation where they would go back to work permits that I know of. It's a pity but companies are really looking into this stuff now because of all the anti-immigration climate when they didn't before (and even to make nice with the government offering to voluntarily do document verification).

I don't know what else to tell you, maybe someone can offer a personal experience with this.

Just tell them the minimum. Tell them you had to get a new SSN and here are my updated papers. That's it. After all you are allowed to work now so dont try to go into details.

Found something on a link the other thread gave:

Quote:
I told my employer that I now have an EAD or a new Social Security number. The employer fired me. What are my rights?

It depends. Your rights may be different depending on several things, including whether or not you gave your employer false documents or false information when you were first hired.

If you did not complete an I-9 form and did not provide false information when you were first hired, your employer may not fire you just because you now present an EAD. Nor may your employer fire you because of where you were born, where you come from, or your native language or accent. If you show your employer an EAD, your employer may not discriminate against you on the basis of your not being a U.S. citizen. Employers who do so may be violating the antidiscrimination provisions of immigration law or Title VII. Depending on the facts of your case and the laws broken by your employer, you may have the right to reinstatement (the right to return to the job) and to damages (money to compensate for harm you have suffered).

But the situation will be different if you completed an I-9 form when you were first hired. For example, if your employer discovers that you lied and presented false documents at the time you were hired, the employer may be able to legally fire you. If the employer’s policy is to fire anybody who is dishonest in the workplace and the employer has enforced the rule consistently for all workers, the employer may be able to legally fire you. Therefore, you should think carefully about whether to disclose the fact that you now have an EAD or a new SSN to your employer. If you have questions, feel free to contact NILC or the Office of Special Counsel for Immigration-Related Unfair Employment Practices (1-800-255-7688 or www.justice.gov/crt/about/osc/).
