Ok, I am not a Dreamer. I live in Virginia.

I usually drive with my european DL and an international DL, but these days I had had both shipped back home so they ll be renewed.

Cop gave me two tickets. One for the traffic infraction, the other for driving without a license. I have to appear on court in February.

By then, I will have my renewed dls, although the international dl will be issued next week or so.

Questions:

1. I am afraid that the judge might ask me about the immigration status. Cop found a report from 2010 and kept asking me about how long I ve been here and i lied (i know, wrong thing to do) before I finally said, I am shocked by the experience and I don't feel in a proper state to be answering such questions.

2. he also told me, that although I am liable to pay a fine, next time I get caught -even with my valid international dl and my european dl- I will be liable to be sent to jail because the law says I need to get a dl within 60 days of moving to the state.

The interesting thing is that I have the car registered to the name of a friend of mine and we have common insurance. However, he told me that the fact I got insurance is proof that I am living in the country. WTF?

I will probably hire a lawyer - although what kind is an issue. Immigration or civil?

Do people have thoughts and experiences regarding a thing like this? Again, I am probably getting away with a couple of hefty fines here, but it feels like another strike like this and I am out. That's what worries me the most.

FWIW, the international license is valid, he accepts it. I was thinking about getting a WA DL or whatever place still allows, but the problem is the requirement to get a VA DL within 60 days. Even if they still see a WADL, if they stop me again and they see me telling them I still got the same address as they had in their files for ages, they still may give me trouble if they want to.

You do not need to hire a lawyer since is not a felony case. Driving without a DL will result in a fine (depends on your state the amount of $). The court will provide a lawyer for you anyways, free of charge (you still pay court fees regardless).

If you have valid car insurance, you should be good. Again, you will only have to pay traffic infraction ticket, and ticket for driving without DL.

Just relax and attend your court date and talk to the lawyer you get provided with. Take your insurance with you.

You should've told the cop you were just a tourist visiting the country, I think that would've let you off the hook.

Yup, that would explain why he was driving against traffic.

Well, that's the plan, but it's hard to pull of when you don't have the actual papers you need to support it and the police officer needs to check up on you to see who you really are. I am glad I had social security # and my name on the insurance because I was probably going to get arrested.
