And we all know replace an EAD takes... forever... And $380 (or more, I forget).

Also, another thought, are you confusing a driver's license with an ID? because they are 2 different things.
Yea here in TX we're able to get state ID's and DL. I wouldn't carry my EAD at all ever. I have a passport and a matricula. Oh and when I mean practice driving I don't necessarily mean on the streets at least not yet. Besides cops here aren't so mean like in other states.

I guess I'll just go ahead and get the ID .

Reason I didn't bother is at moment I rarely need an ID. And I would need to hand state ID in when I get my license. If I end up needing to fly before I have my DL maybe I will get it.

If you work in an industry that's subject to appearances by immigration officials, carry a copy of your EAD even if you have a state issued ID.

you really shouldn't carry your ead with you around anywhere, unless you're applying for a job or going through a checkpoint. otherwise just wait for your id, or carry your passport.

Until my DL arrives in the mail, don't know what's taking so long.

I think as long you remember your number in the card, it should be okay since at least there is something to be looked up
