Alondra, the social security administration is completely independent from USCIS, the institution granting us the work permit, therefore you have to go to a local office and obtain a social security card with your work permit and passport/birth certificate.

The 10-day wait actually refers to people waiting 10 days since their EAD was issued to get into DHS' system so Social Security can verify you.

Hope that helps

Wait so not everyone has to wait 10 days to go to a SS Office?? How do you know if you're one of those people?

Well, I didn't have to but that's because I already had a social security card before DACA. But for all those who haven't had one in the past, it's best to wait it seems, to request their cards. At least, that's what it seems that is happening.

I'm not sure if this has been asked but do we need our passport AND our birth certificate? Or just either of those? I'm hoping to get my SSN next week but I don't have a passport so I'm debating whether to get one or not.

It's best to take your birth certificate, they prefer it.

Some offices require that you bring both, if you have them. I had to go back home to show them both documents. Ridiculous, but I'm not complaining.
