I read somebody else's post saying that he lost his internship at some accounting company. I just wanted to let you guys know that last month I lost an internship at a big company due to HR deciding I may need sponsorship in the future. I had my hiring manager helped me out by trying to keep my internship but nothing could of been done. The company is very strict with the policy. The hiring manager was very helpful and we left in a good note for future work. At the moment, a mentor from that company is trying to help, hopefully good news will come.

In the application it did not say anything about permanent residence or citizenship, it said if you are authorize to work in the USA. It did ask if you need sponsorship in the future in which I said no.

I read people saying that they cannot discriminate and so on, but the reason they are doing this is because they do not want to waste money on training you and giving you a job if they think you may leave in the future (due to EAD). The only thing we can do is talk to people from the company and explain our situation and take it from there.

Due to my EAD, I had to decline two internships at Pratt & Whitney (which the manager personally called me and told me about the position) because DACA did not fall under their category. Their category was Citizen, Permanent Residence, or Asylum.

Also, due to my EAD I was not able to apply to a scholarship from Sikorsky offering 10,000 dollars a year for school, a paid internship and full time job after graduation because of the same deal as Pratt & Whitney (both companies are from UTC).

At the moment, I am waiting to hear from Verizon (Engineering internship) for a second interview and I already explain the hiring manager my situation so I do not waste my time and his.

From all these experiences, I really wish the Dream Act passes this year so I can get a good job and not end up working at the pizzeria, some fast food place or electrical work. The reason I say this is because I am an engineer and without working experience I am useless once I graduate.

For those that are applying to internships for Engineering or similar degrees, talk to the hiring managers for help and if it does not work out remember to always keep in contact with them.

WTH man! EAD is not permanent whether it is for DACA or other immigration process. If they don't want to hire people with EAD, they should list citizen/resident on the application to not waste time. Gosh.

I think during interview, the company manager will definitely ask your working status in US, I have been interviewed for lots of companies and that what I experienced, once you said you are holding an EAD and stated the expiration date, everything is clear and you will not run into the situation that you had.
And the decision of processing forward with EAD candidates is up to the company.

That's the best you can do and you should do.

What did you tell them? About your DACA status?
I don't tell my potential employer my status, I am not sure if they will find it.

Read this, it might help:

I was turned away from two job offers. The application only asked if I had the right to work in the U.S.

Oh well, gotta keep looking.

Well, I am not sure about the situations you encountered, all recruiters asked about my work status at the very beginning of the talk, so I never run into a problem that they make a wrong assumption about my citizenship

This is so disappointing to me to hear. Now all those threads about jobs kinda lose all meaning. Hate feeling like this, it really does feel like we're second class citizens all over again. Can't complain but can't be completely happy either :/
