A few years ago a friend of mines (who owns his own a fairly successful business) had me read Rich Dad Poor Dad (coincidentally he is like a my very own rich father).
The gist being invest your time a patience in your own future instead of someone else's.

Remember an employer is never responsible for an employee and seeks the lowest bidder that could maintain the quality he needs. It's the employee who lives in fear that his job might be one day taken, weather that is by robots, the Chinese or even illegal immigrants, or lost due to some arbitrary event.

I know running a business isn't for everyone, but personally I'd rather call the shots on the direction of my career. We should all have a drive that we personally want to see fulfilled.
