I only have experience because my dad does this for a living. It really depends where you are going to be a taxi driver. If you want to earn $60,000 per year you have to be prepared to put in crazy hours to earn that amount. It's possible... but again you have to be ready to work like a machine. Also, if you want to make this kind of money, you have to work in the bigger cities like NYC.

Talking about 12+ hours a day working 5-6 days a week. It's not a good long term career, there are a lot of risks. You are better off doing something else.

I'm pretty sure it's a job, not a career. And depending upon how cab companies work in your area, it might be more of a loss than something to make profit out of, especially if you have to pay for the maintenance of the vehicle (which will get really really worn out very quickly), pay insurance, bonds, etc etc etc. Don't always believe the salary... You might want to find out the rest.

I should mention that my dad worked as a shuttle driver for more than a decade. It was good money until he realized all of those extra costs he incurred were eating up his profit. If you have or are going to have a work permit, I highly recommend another job. Like MalditoDuende said, it's a very dangerous career. Shuttle driving is a little better because you don't have to pick up random people of the street usually, but driving at ungodly hours in bad weather is not fun... and very dangerous.

I just got a materials engineering degree. But I must agree, the fact that I have not been allowed to drive for so long and cars having been one of my childhood passions and liking to travel on the road, I have fantasizes with being a truck driver, not the same as a cab driver but driving none-the-less.

But I go with the general concensus, with the price of fuel it is likely to be a very expensive employment option. Not to mention the many risks involved.
