I have a friend in this field, pay is good, but most of them are seasonal jobs, once the project is done, you'll need to look of other. Took him few years experiences to be hire by movie production. So yeah, I think it is a pretty good field, he started 100 per day , then 200 per day, now he is at 500 per day.

If you're interested in the simulation/modeling aspect of animation then you have to get into computer science. I'm taking a class in video game programming now and we're learning how to make 3D stuff. Everything is programming and math. You also need to be very good in vector calculus and linear algebra.

If you're interested in the art, then I don't know.
