In Texas even if you had a valid SSN and had renewed several times, they'd ask you to come in person and show a green card. There was no BSing out of it. I still have nightmares about that day.

Yes in Illinois, if you received your DACA approval along with the I765, you can go apply for one at the DMV. (Go get your SSN first with your I765)

In illinois, even if you are not eligible to apply for the DACA, you can still get one - I would look online for which documents you would need if you were not able to get the approval for DACA.

In case anyone's wondering, here's the list of states who allow DL's with DACA:

(AR, CA, CO, CT, DE, FL, GA, HI, IL, IN, ID, IA, KS, KY, MD, MA, MI, MN, MS, MO, NV, NH, NJ, NY, NC, OK, OR, PA, RI, SC, TN, TX, VA, WI)

Don't need DACA: (WA, UT, NM)

Back when we were living in FL my mom had to come all the way to Houston to get her DL. She got it with the antorcha. But now we live in TX and she only has it till next year I think =/ . She can't renew it since she can't show a SS. She actually just got a ticket a few weeks ago and it was like 3 in one. Driving over the speed in a school zone, not changing the address and not being able to show proof of insurance, that later was dropped since she took it to the office. The total was like 700+ and without that insurance one it ended up to 350. She cannot change the adress though since no SS.

Yeah if she can't change the address then there is almost no hope of renewal. I'm surprised they even let her get a DL without a SSN because even in the mid-90's, Texas required a SSN. Even if she had one though, they'd ask for a green card.

What was the fine for not changing the address? Is it just paying a fine and being done with it? It's probably worse for an out of state license. I'm not sure what story one could tell the officer without him guessing it's BS. "you just moved back to Texas but your car has been registered here and you've had insurance with a Texas address? "

CIR can't get here soon enough.

What happens if my parents drive without a license which is same as having an expired license?

They will just pay a fine ?

Around 2005, my mom, dad and I all got driver's licenses in Michigan without an SSN or EAD, simply by showing our passports as proof of ID and utility bills for residence. Obviously that's not possible nowadays, but it was as far as 2006 I think.

I first got a renewal letter that asked me to come into the office, at which point they said they now required me to give an SSN if I wanted to renew. I was not able to renew it.

Strangely, my mom got the form to renew by mail, and she was able to renew it once more without having to put an SSN on the form. But that only worked once, she wasn't able to renew it again.

My dad is the only one who has been able to renew his Michigan DL. He also got a form to renew it by mail, except he has an SSN that was given to him in the '70s (not someone else's SSN). He put it on the form, and they accepted it - he also has credit on his name with it. Ever since he's been able to renew it by mail AND by going to the office. Since they already have an SSN on his file they just ask for his DL and renew it.

This really depends on the state AND county/town, as they may have additional fines/penalties on top of those the state has. The only way to find out for sure would be to ask someone with knowledge of traffic law in your town. Different Police Departments handle traffic offenses different.

I was just curious what happened in Texas since we're both stuck together at the moment. I do know that Texas was stricter than other states even before all this hoopla.
