The White House says there isn’t much enthusiasm for delaying a vote on a bill to overhaul the country’s immigration system.

A package of reforms are expected to hit the Senate floor sometime next month, but one of the key members of the so-called Senate “Gang of 8″ said this past weekend that the bill is not complete, and that he wants hearings on it when it is finally ready.

“Arriving at a final product will require it to be properly submitted for the American people’s consideration, through the other 92 senators from 43 states that weren’t part of this initial drafting process,” said Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) in a statement on Sunday. “In order to succeed, this process cannot be rushed or done in secret.”

Rubio’s made those remarks after three fellow negotiators suggested that most of the bill’s details had been agreed upon.

During a briefing with reporters today, White House spokesman Jay Carney disagreed with Rubio’s call to put the legislation through a “regular order” process that would include hours of debate.

“The president has made clear that he believes that there is no reason to delay this process, there is no reason to postpone it,” he said.

Carney argued that the main principles of the legislation have been debated for years.

“The basic outlines of what has been under consideration and is being worked on by the Gang of Eight and has been proposed by the President reflects legislation that was considered in Congress, in 2006, 2007,” he said, referring to a comprehensive bill that ultimately failed.

The spokesman added that the Senate Judiciary Committee, which has congressional jurisdiction over immigration laws, ”has held multiple hearings on this issue.”

Good to finally hear something out of the white house encouraging a fast-track.
