You will first get a learners permit which you have to practice on for 6 months, then you'll takea road test to get a probationary license for a year, after a year you'll get a basic drivers license.

That is the process for ALL first time drivers. If you are 21 or over, you have a permit for 3 months. I had a permit from January to March. Beginning of April I got my license.

You don't have to drive with your parents.

You can drive with anyone that is 21 years or older with 3 years of driving experience and a valid NJ drivers license holder.

You can also take lessons for $35/hour at some driving schools around the state. Look around your area.

You have hour and passenger restrictions on your permit as well. Make sure to read the types of licenses in the manual.

Yeah i was reading about it. For your permit is it a piece of paper ? Or does it look like a license but instead of license it says permit?

Man.. it's no less than $55/hr here in San Antonio to drive around with someone from a driving school! That's unbelievable given how salaries here in San Antonio are really low.

Sucks. Got my permit 2 weeks ago here in California and just passed the driving test a few days ago, will get my license in a couple days I think. The laws may be different but maybe you can wing it and try to take the test right away?
