And $3k a semester is taking into account in-state tuition rate. Double the costs for out-state rate. It usually is in the rage of 60k-80k for 4 years of college (2 years CC + 2 years university)here at out-of-state rate. No one has the balls to spend that much money in this status. A lot of us don't get in-state because colleges automatically charge you out-of-state when you don't put down that you're either a citizen or green card holder. I'm in this situation. Hopefully DACA status should help me get in-state (still would be around 30k-40k in-state).

$3000 / semester sounds entirely too high for in-state at a community college to me. I know each city is different but Houston's Community college has an estimator and for 4, 3 hour classes for in-state, out of district students including student fees, it's about $1700. "out of district" means for you not familiar means you live in one school district (or out in the county) but want to go to HCC which is in the Houston Independent School Discrict ...it happens in very large cities. If you happen to live in the city where your property taxes go towards the schools in that district, that same tuition is only $800 a semester. Surely a Dreamer working a shitty job can save up $800 a semester. Here is the estimator.

And yes, community colleges are only 2 years, but if you play it smart, you can take many of your core classes there and then transfer to a university. The only pitfall there is that your credits may transfer (make sure they transfer for both your major and the university - ie. calculus based physics vs. regular physics), your GPA will NOT transfer so you won't have many easy classes to pad your GPA at the university and your major classes will reflect your GPA. For me, this was an issue since at the community college my GPA was damn near 3.75 and at the university it was more like 2.4.

^Yes this sounds about right. I'm actually attending HCC right now. I paid everything out of pocket since I didn't want to ask for TAFSA but now I'm not so sure if I should keep doing it. It really doesn't bother me since it's not that expensive.

Does anyone know if it's true that there's a limited amount of internet/distance ed classes we can take? Someone mentioned this to me I had never heard of this before.

Wow, $3k/semester for a community college? I paid about $4k/semester for my state uni and thought that was awful.

At my community college (ACCD) tuition was about $800/semester with maybe a $15 extra fee for classes with a lab component.

That sounds extremely convenient when you compare it to the actual cost of classes at the universities in the area

To OP, I know this directly doesn't apply to you, but I would look around your area to figure if any CCs are doing this. I'm in shock that the CC im trying to take classes at is acknowledging DACA.

Unfortunately, I'm not approved for DACA yet and I need to sign up before May 6. I blame you Vermont!!!!
