I'm from Minnesota, and you although you do not necessarily need to provide a SSN for an ID/driver's license, you must bring another document that proves your legal immigration status. Most people bring their SSN. (Currently, they are trying to pass a MN law for drivers licenses regardless of status).

If you are under the age of 25, you'll have to take a driver's education course. If you are not confident enough to drive, then you can get a learner's permit and practice driving with an adult. The majority of the questions on the theory test are common sense and you might pass it without studying, but you'll definitely have to give the handbook a read because it's the small details that will cause you to fail the road test. With all this said, the theory test took me around 10 minutes to complete, the actual driving test, around 15.

- Before you start, check your mirrors to ensure that they are positioned correctly and make sure everyone has their seat belts on.
- Move your head when checking your mirrors and the car's blind spots. This will let them know that you are paying attention.
- Remember to signal when parallel parking and parking in general.
- Remember to stop behind white lines and also not on them. The DMV I went to had a white line right at the end of the short road leading from the parallel parking zone. I saw one person not stopping who failed the test within 3 minutes of starting it, haha!
- Make full stops.
- When approaching railroad tracks slow down, roll down your windows, stop briefly and look to the sides.
- Learn the speed you should drive at for every setting and scenario. Residential and business areas, road work zones, when there's a police car parked on the side of the road flashing its lights, when there's an accident, etc. They actually look at your speedometer.
- Learn how to make proper turns. Don't invade the other lanes when turning because this could be interpreted as the possibility of hitting somebody.
- When changing lanes signal a few seconds in advance and not right at the moment of making the turn.
- Leave plenty of space between cars when the car is moving or stopped.
- There are street lights and signs that you probably have never seen, but it's likely that they'll be in the area where your DMV is located--learn them all.

And lastly and probably the best piece of advice: drive in the area before the test takes place, hell, you can even follow the people taking the test to get an idea of the things you'll encounter.
