I have been reading through some of the threads, but seems to have gone wild and i cant find an answer to my question. I just got my DACA approved and waiting for the card on the mail to arrive within the next 30 days. My question is, after i receive the employment card, do i just go to the social security administration office to apply for a number? I have also been reading that some people in CA have already applied for a driver's license, but i hear AB2189 which would allow people to get their drivers license will not be effective until January 3,2013. Can someone clarify this for me?

Get EAD.
Go to SSA to apply for an SSN.
Ask them when you can call them to see if you have been verified.
Call them back, if you have been verified go back to SSA
for a printout of your SSN or wait for the card to arrive in the mail.
Go to the DMV and get your ID and take the written test.

My sister which got approved and got her SSN did just what JJ Glo said, as soon as we got her EAD we went to the social security office with her birth certificate and her EAD, we waited like every other normal person would then got called, took no less than 15 minutes after she was called then she was done.. she asked when she could call so she can at least get the # and they had told her that it could take up to 3 days for them to clear everything with DHS. she called after a week and they told her that she was cleared, after that we went to get a print out and straight to the DMV afterwards.. that was it... pay 27 dollars for a drivers license then take your written test.. which she passed... you get your picture taken and your permit! ... now she has to schedule a behind the wheel and there you have it, you'll blend in like everybody else no more having to worry about getting your car taken away and paying ridiculous amounts of money, also... you can buy that new car you've been wanting but decided to hold off on it because of the whole license thing, best of luck everybody!

the AB 2189 applies to those who qualify for DACA but who are not granted a work permit and there for will not be able to get a SSN.

if you are approved for DACA and have an EAD, and you live in CA, you can get a DL. now some people have been given a DL for only the length of time that their EAD is valid and others have been granted a full DL which is good for 5 yrs from your DOB. it all depends on who you get at the DMV and how regulated they are.

Buying a new car? What about financing and credit checks and all that good stuff?
