i found this person on craigslist. he is selling his honda accord 2005 61000 miles for only $1990. the car's vin is 1HGCM56755A109284. too good to be true? i contacted the person and here's the reply:

"Hi,I've received your email regarding the 2005 Honda Accord with 61,000 miles on it. The car is still for sale and my asking price is $1,990 It is a Accord model loaded with everything. The car is very well maintained and it has just been completely serviced. The engine(2.4L I4 MPI) runs very good and the automatic transmission shifts perfectly. The VIN is: 1HGCM56755A109284, the car is in perfect condition with clear title,no accidents, no liens or loans.
I'm an oceanographer and I'm on sea at this moment, so I left the car in XXXX ,XX, at the shipping company, it's already packed and waiting to be shipped anywhere. Shipping/delivery is included in this price as I almost closed the deal with another customer but he was unable to take the loan from the bank. I've already prepared shipping for him as he was out of state.
Let me know if you are still interested.
Regards,
Watson Sharon"

If a deal seems too good to be true, it probably is.

Whenever they say that the car is being held somewhere and they will ship it to you or if they say that they're out of town or state, it's a scam.

In the worst of conditions, that car is worth $8,000. You really think someone would sell it for $1,990, plus have the shipping and delivery included in that price? They could drive the car to any dealer and get $5,000 any day for it.

A little common sense would tell you that this is a scam.

My guess is he's going to ask for money upfront and tell you he's out of town but he'll hold the car for you until he comes back. Meanwhile he's out with his Nigerian Prince spending your money that you'll never see again.

http://www.kbb.com/ and http://www.nadaguides.com/ are good places to get car values.

I would suggest going to a car dealership (Carmax if they have one in your area) for your first car. It will cost about 10%-20% more than finding one in CL, but you have a 30 day repair warranty, financing options, and more importantly, they check the hell out of their cars for flood damage and other things. My first car was a $500 piece of shit. I spent about $2000 on repairs in a year.

2nd car I thought I was smart and trusted a friend of a friend and bought a $5000 car...had accident and frame damage that nobody had told me about.

Last 2 cars were from dealerships. I've had the current car for 9 years now and no issues aside from minor things. I think I've spent about $700 on repairs so far in 9 years.
