My brother applied for a Discover It card couple weeks after he got his SSN and was approved for $800. I also applied for a Discover It card and was approved except I already had previous credit history. Usually I recommend the Capital One Cash Back card for first timers but I think Discover It is a good alternative. The only thing that sucks about it is that there are still a lot of places that don't accept discover. My brother carries cash with him but it's a good way to build credit.

Just applied for Capital One Journey Student CC and got denied..
I was gonna try their 'Newcomers' card since people are having better luck with that one but it says I can't apply for another Capital One card for 45 days...

Any other suggestions besides secured cards??

If you're not having luck with credit cards then you might want to be added as an authorized user under who has good credit history. If that's not an option then citi forward student card isn't too bad. It was my second credit card and I apped for it soon after my first one so I know my credit score wasn't that great. It was also my favorite credit card before I got chase freedom.

why not go to your bank and just get a secured credit card and try to put some money in your savings account to use as collateral?

There's no risk to apply for a secured credit card, you just need a deposit. I got a secured card from Bank of America. $300 as a deposit, $40 annual fee, after a year of good credit responsibility like paying on time every month you can apply for a regular credit card and they will refund your deposit. Just don't keep applying for regular credit cards you will get denied because you have no credit established, you need a secured credit card and when you get it, pay in full every month, credit takes time unfortunately. Good luck tho

There are methods of establishing your credit fast, but it takes some responsibility. The trick really is simple and that is to always pay on time and never ever miss a payment.

The first credit card I applied for when I got my social was capitol one. I had no previous credit history and I applied online, I got approve in like 2 minutes for a credit limit of $300 that was in January. Ever since I have been trying to apply for other credit cards to build my credit with no luck (etc. Wal-Mart, Sears, American Express). The most bizarre thing happened last week, I applied for 2 cards with Bank of America a secured and a unsecured card. I got approve for the unsecured card for a credit limit of $600 and denied for the secured card.

These are the 2 cards I got approve for:

http://www.capitalone.com/credit-cards/journey-student/

Credit Limit: $300

https://www.bankofamerica.com/credit...credit-card.go

Credit Limit $ 600

Here we go (WAIT youre the guy with the 1 year EAD card)

before you realize this, you CAN build credit on ITIN, you just cannot get see your credit score. However, once you get a SSN, whatever your build gets transfer here.

I had to put up $300 as collateral, but i have a card that im using to build credit right now with WellsFargo. After i show them that im reliable i will be getting my $300 back, plus a higher credit limit. Just ask them about a non-secured card...or is a secured one...i forget. Lol
