Yes, with credit you have to be responsible, but out of a car and a house, there's nothing else you should need credit for (again, not 95% of the times). Most of the times with a credit card you're paying fees and interest, what for? So you can afford to have a higher credit limit? As immigrants we shouldn't be known for this, we should be known for saving and investing. I also have a CC and plan to use it for tuition (if necessary) but not for a 65" TV like many in here are looking forward to buying...it's a matter of opinion.

Everyone starts with a good credit score. However why wouldn't be desperate? Tell me why they ahouldnt be seeing how the sooner and faster you will bill that credit you can start taking loans for stuff like car loans? And like you most people here need to build a good credit history to get tution loans so as long they have cosigner who has a permanent status or usc. We shouldn't care what they buy with their credit cards as it's them who will be responsible for it not you or me. They don't need to ask us lots of lots of people online will gladly help them. All they gotta do is Google how to establish a good credit score. Maybe you should be giving some actual usuful advice instead of being pessimistic about this.

I've read through many threads about credit cards, and I have yet to read a thread where people want to get a credit card for materialistic reasons. You're right in that people don't NEED a credit card 95% of the time but that 5% is what we build up our credit for. I've had a credit card for years and have yet to miss a payment. I buy a lot of expensive goods as well. Do I pay interest or fees? Not even once. I don't care about APRs when I apply for a credit card because I always pay my balance in full. Who's to say that the people who are wanting credit cards aren't going to do the same? Also, all of my credit cards have rewards. If you use cash then that's it. However, if you use a cash back/points card then you get a percentage of that money back. I'm sure there isn't anyone that's going to turn down free money.

BTW don't use a credit card to pay tuition. I'm almost hundred percent sure that the APR on your credit card will be higher than getting an emergency tuition loan from the school.

I got a secured credit card through Bank of America. I went in the branch to update my social and license number and as expected the lady suggested I apply for a credit card. So I said sure why not. Didn't get approved for it, as expected. But I did get approved for a partially secured credit card. I had to put $99 down and have a max credit of $500. I know someone else that got the same credit card, paid her balance in full at the end of the month and now 6 months later they've raised her limit to $1,000. So I figured her credit score has gone up too.

I do payment plans, those are $30 a pop (plus $60 if you don't do it on time), so that would be $90 extra per semester. Considering I plan to pay tuition (less than $1k per semester) in two months (thankfully I have no debts except car payment and regular bills) , I don't think I'm losing at all.

My point throughout all the many threads (why do people keep opening threads with the same information baffles me), is that most people do sound desperate to get the credit cards. Not because we're 'legal' means that we need to get in debt as soon as possible to keep up with everybody else. I say this because it all starts with a few credit cards, then bigger limits, and ends up with not paying them (which IS stealing, no matter how you wanna phrase it), and sometimes even bankruptcy.

Even though most people here are educated and have common sense, if most of us haven't had credit for a long time, more than likely it won't be as necessary. In case of an emergency, be realistic, credit cards wont' matter much.

After all, I say this to prevent people from going into the slippery road of debt. We should be saving and investing, not feeling safe by having a good credit card.
