I went to apply for my ss yesterday w a valid foreign passport but they said I needed an original birth certificate. Anyway they ended up letting me apply w my passport but made a big deal about it

You can use either one according to the SSA guidelines. Some places are just not well informed and like to make a deal out of it.

I am going to apply tomorrow morning guys!! Taking my EAD and foreign passport! Might take birth certificate just in case they "trip".

Yea I checked what documents I needed before going in. I was trying to pull up info on my phone but couldn't find it.

I went today to apply for my SS# and I just gave the lady my EAD and birth certificate, since I don't have a valid passport. Everything went very smooth and she filed the application for me, I just waited and checked everything was correct. Although she did ask a few questions, I guess she just wanted to verify my information.

The lady told me I should be getting my social within 10 days on the mail!

hey guys I had a social security card and number way back from 1998
and i have been using it..

am i supposed to get a new number? or tell them i had one so just reissue the card?

If you fill out the application, there is a section there to write down a SSN previously assigned to you. You will keep the same number.

I'm not sure what would happen if you don't mention your old number.
