all this talk about how canceling the credit card with the most history is going to kill your credit score is overrated.

^THIS
Even if you cancel your credit card it still stays on your report for 10 years. I have a credit card on my report that was closed 3 years ago.

Exactly. The only thing not to do is to cancel your one and only credit card. If you don't like it, just keep it and apply for another one, otherwise you are deleting your credit history.

I got this from TransUnion on Youtube.

A year of 0% APR is pretty fantastic, you know.

I got denied for the capital one platinum credit card, I guess i should have read this thread before I applied for that card, instead I could have applied for the newcomers card and test my luck there!

This is a very very important topic especially for us who have new SSN and starting out building credit. My personal opinion would be to NOT close any of your credit cards. But beware of the consequences if the card all of a sudden is shown to have a balance by the credit bureaus after it has been sitting idle. This will take a momentary hit on your credit report. I have a Cap One card that started me off with a $500 limit just over two years ago and until this day they have increased my limit by only $250. Meanwhile during this time I've acquired a four other top of the line credit cards equaling a whopping credit limit of about $16,000. One of the cards has no pre-set spending limit either. The point is, that one credit card that you have at this stage is VERY valuable. If you use it wisely, it will absolutely get your credit rolling through the roof. Number one advise...NEVER be late on your payments. Second, keep your credit utilization to less than 35%. It is not as complicated as it seems. It is actually necessary for you to do in order to build a secure financial future. Everything depends on your credit these days especially major auto, school, and home loan applications. But definitely beware of the pitfalls. It will be very tempting to go on shopping sprees. Be advised you will be required to pay back your lender as the deadlines near. Don't fall into this credit trap. Also, as you start receiving offers, be very selective in choosing the offers. You will receive offers from very less known institutions that will offer no sort of rewards for membership. I definitely suggest sticking with offers from the usual suspects...aka Discover, AMEX, Chase, and Citi. These are the top cards that will get you out there...GL.
