I'm sure I can't be the only one who is in this position. I'm 22 years old and starting a resume. This is all new to me. I've tried reading about this topic, but I'm still in the dark on things. Should I have a resume even if I'm trying to apply for an entry level position at a retail store/mall/janitorial position? I've written most of my resume out asides the "Experience part". I've done "small jobs" like cutting trees/cleaning but that is as far as I've gone. I couldn't work or volunteer legally until now. I just want to be prepared for now and for the future. I'm not limiting myself to where I'm going to apply. Does any one have any advice or tips?

I'll be attending school in the fall, so I'm looking for a part time job.

Thank you for your time.

What do you mean you couldn't volunteer legally? Stop making excuses.

I've volunteered at a ton of places since I was 15 and they've never checked my documents. If it's free labor, then they don't care. My brother even volunteered at the city library before DACA and they didn't ask anything.

Now to your resume. Even if you've only done small jobs, it counts as job experience. Write it down. It shows a potential employer that you're willing to work. Before I got a "real job," I put down when I would be a sign spinner or do yard work around the neighborhood.

To be fair, I went to help out at a local Youth Group and the person in charge told me that he was going to e-mail me a form to fill out to run a background check on me... Surely I wouldn't have been able to volunteer there without having legal documents to run a check on me.

Anyways, I'm sure there's other places that don't ask for that.

Could you please list the places you've volunteered at while being undocumented because I've been wanting to volunteer and every time I check what I need I need a social. Maybe it's because I want to volunteer at organizations that prevent child abuse, or after school programs for children.

I think the only place someone mentioned on this website is the Red Cross, I think you can use your ITIN number.

Call a temp agency. Get shit job. Work few months. Go somewhere else. Profit.

Try volunteering at your local hospital. Excellent customer service experience.

For mine I also mostly put volunteer experiences. I volunteered a lot on local community organizations, and also immigrant rights groups.

If it's a very basic entry level position that you think you could do, then just mention the informal stuff you have done. That demonstrates responsibility. Fuck it.

I volunteered with an organization called Hands on Greater Portland. They have locations in various parts throughout the U.S. so you can just change the name of the city and find your local website. It's super easy, you just make an online account.

Once you create an account, you can look at their calender and sign up for any event that you want. They have tooooooons of options, and most of the events are one time things.

I also volunteered at the local park department and I would help build trails and remove invasive species. I also volunteered at the local sate run food bank. I would help package food baskets and bulk products into smaller bags. My brother also volunteered at the city run library.

I made my first resume back in 2006, I never had a job before that, here are a few tips... look for a good template, Microsoft office I think has some good templates that give your resume a nice presentation.

Fill in the blanks.. there are several sections on your resume, at first you want to add your education, graduated from high school? put it on, in an organized manner, year, GPA if it is good. List all the education institutions you been in, and the year, some college? put it on, and if you have been to special programs, put it on it.

I remember back when I was in high school I used to be in this school group called G-Force, different schools may offer different stuff. If you are in athletics, put on , but in its own category, play football? put it on.

Then, work experience.. I didn't have any work experience back then but I had been in a MLM business (multiply level marketing business), I put that on there, and put what you did, you done telephone calls?, sent faxes? put it on. Know how to do something, that relates to the jobs you may be applying for, put it on.

I even list my hobbies in my resume, language you speak, etc.

You can use this as your foundation. When you get hired some where, that will add up to work experience, next things you'll know is that your resume will be full of jobs and stuff...

I was even told once, I have had too many jobs, and that showed I wasn't willing to stay in one place lol , Still got hired though

References, you can put 3 references in your resume, put your best friend there, it don't matter, and find a couple people that are of importance or that have business or whatever if you may put them in your resume.

So far we you'd have, enough to almost fill an entire page if you organized well.

Education
|_ Schools
|_Colleges
Work Experience
|_ What you can do
|_ What you have done
|_List any employment or things you'd done for someone
Other attitudes
|_Languages you speak
|_Hobies
|_You went to nationals with your football team, etc
|_You ran Cross country and won several medals, etc
References
|_3 people that know you

Hope this helps

Btw my resume now days, impresses anyone, corporate and what not. It is really good foundation, I am telling you

I even made it fancier this year, I added the logos of the companies I worked for, I think this adds extra added value, if people read in your resume what they are looking for, you bet they gonna put you on their top preference, good luck!
