Hello! I have a friend who is terrified of driving. I've been pushing her to get her DL ASAP just in case something happens and from one day to the next the privilege is taken from us for any random reason. Her mom drives an SUV so she is afraid to take the test in that car since it's quite big, I told her to borrow my car but it's a Honda Accord and she doesn't park it very well. Anyway, we were thinking of having her take it in a smaller car but we don't know anyone who has a smaller car.

I remembered when I started learning to drive I drove a Fiat for the weekend and it was very easy and comfortable. And figured she would have to be ok in something that small.

Does anyone know if the DMV here in Miami, Fl allows you to take the driving test in a rented car? I know you just have to show proof of insurance on the car and they check that the car is in working condition. I can rent the car since she won't be allowed to since she only has a learners permit. And I can either purchase insurance from the rental place or show my insurance. But I don't know if she will be allowed to take the driving test in it.

I looked online and there isn't really a straight answer. If anyone has any idea or knows someone who has done it please let me know.

I can rent a car, I am over 25 and I have a valid DL and CC so that won't be a problem. (Just an FYI)

Thanks!

instead of paying money to rent a car, pay for driving instructions, they'll teach you and they'll give you the test, I've never heard of any state's DMV allowing that, but it's worth a call to them, at least. ask if they allowed it.. btw i did my test with my brother-in-law Pick up truck.. it was hard for me to do the three point turn. cus the truck was too big. he just told some directions. he still pass me lol. i got lucky.

My tip is go to the DMV and look for driving schools there, usually they will teach you the basics and let you rent their car to take the test. It's what I did and it Cost me $50. The car i ended up driving was a Scion IQ.

It should be mandatory to take the test with a manual transmission vehicle. People these days are too distracted doing other stuff while driving because most of the cars are automatic and they don't have to worry about actually driving.

Your right even after years of driving manual I'm still twice as careful, I don't text at all while driving and usually don't use my cell unless I'm stuck in traffic and got time. Other than that it's fun, but the majority of people are lazy and don't want to learn. Once you learn how to drive manual than you can actually call yourself a driver.

Thank you for your replies!

She knows how to drive, she learned back in HS when she took driver's ed. She received her learner's permit back then but once they passed the no licenses for undocumented she was never able to get the permanent one. All those years she never really drove since she is so terrified of it. Even now she won't really drive. She's terrified but we are all insisting she gets her permanent license. Her mother's license expired and she can't renew it so she needs to make sure she can help with the driving since her mom shouldn't be risking it so much.

I'll see what I can do to help her. I just had that idea and thought it might work. If anything I guess we'll get a small car from one of the driving schools there.

Again, thank you everyone for your help!

I was also terrified when I started driving! Tell your friend it gets easier with time and practice. You can only get better when you face your fears.

I have a question as well.. its sorta simliar to this.

I don't live in Florida though, I live in North Carolina.. in a generally rural area.

My question is, how can I get my license without a car that the owner of it still has a valid license?
My parents have 2 cars but their licenses expired in 07 and 09. They are still insured and in their names however.. how am i supposed to appear at the DMV with one of their cars and tell them someone with a license drove me there?

Due to my status I basically pushed away my US friends and haven't kept in contact with them and all of the hispanics I know are in the same situation (with no license). Im lost lol

I don't believe the owner of the car has to have a valid license. The car itself just has to be insured and registered, anyone with a license can drive you to your driving test.

At least that's the way it is here in California.
