That's because they don't tell you about it, you have to ask.

You can get a printout, which is a letter that has your name and SSN number on it, before your SSN arrives in the mail. You can usually get a printout within 2-3 days after applying for an SSN.

So I won't get that print out mailed to me unless I requested it? Also how long to it actually take for the actual card to get deliverd??

A print out is a paper that they print out with your number already generated, at the social security office. You really don't need the print out. Unless you are really desperate to get your ssn. Your ss card should arrive within a week, at most 2 weeks.

I had the same experience as you.
My work permit card arrived went the same day to apply for ssn.
Was told by the person at the window that since my card was less than 10 days old.
They had to have the DHS verify that the documents were all legit.
That about a week. This morning I called to check the status of my ssn.
And it finally cleared DHS. So now I should be able to walk in and ask for a print out.
