From what I understand in 2014 all health insurances are switching to some metal based obamacare. I just have a question about if we can still get health insurance like right now without any government help or subsidy. I know that DACA are not covered by obamacare, but I just don't know if we can still buy private insurance on our own like right now.

You can't use the Health Insurance Exchanges but of course you can look into insurance companies in your area that can provide you with insurance. I listed some below.

Aetna
UnitedHealthcare
Humana
Anthem
BlueCross BlueShield
Kaiser Permanente
Southern Health (Coventry, in some areas)
Cigna
Aflac

How are the private insurance plans like in 2014? If I understood it right in 2014 all plans need to follow four metal levels and ten essential benefits, which make them very expensive compared to now.

I am in California. If I needed to buy insurance, does it mean that I have to go to those individual website instead of coveredca.com to buy insurance?

The medal levels are just classifications of the coverage provided, with the bronze classification being the lowest amount of coverage. They do not affect the pricing of insurance and are just indicators used in the exchange.

And yes, you'll have to get individual quotes directly from these companies. You could try ehealthcare.com which is a private comparison website that is not affiliated with the government exchanges. I however did not have much success with them but doesn't mean you won't.

What about people who do not have status? Are they required to get health insurance?

The IRS does not differentiate between immigration status. But if you were filing taxes before as a citizen and you then try to file as a non-resident alien, you might be audited and you could end up owing a lot of money if you were claiming tax credits that you weren't allowed to claim.

The responsible route is to get insurance regardless of immigration status. And continue paying taxes as a responsible individual. If you can't afford insurance, then the tax penalty would be added to the total taxable income, you won't necessarily pay the $625. You will still get a refund if you overpaid or still get a bill if you owe in taxes.
