So back in 2012, I graduated High school from New Jersey top 15%. I was eligible for a scholarship for 2 years tuition free to a local community college, which I didn't get because of the papers situation. I still go to that college but I pay regular in-state tuition which is around 530$ per class. This is my third semester. It's a 2 year school so next semester would be my 4th (last) but I'm trying to transfer out this semester or for Fall 2014.

I have been thinking and I want to be on my own or try to be on my own. I know that a few states give financial aid like NY, California, Texas, and New Mexico. I want to go and possibly dorm in most likely NY, slight chance CA. What do you guys think of this? Will I really be able to receive some money from these 2 states? I know CA is like the most open state in immigration but you never know.

If you are attending a college in NJ then if you go to any other college outside NJ you will be considered as Out of State Student, therefore paying twice as much. I don't think there is any way around because your transcript will show that you are from NJ and in order to qualify as In-State Tuition you have to live in the state for at least 12 consecutive months.

PS: living in dorms is way...... too expensive......

I went to a 4 year SUNY school too, and we don't get any kind of financial aid. Even with DACA my understanding is we don't get any financial aid - there's a bill to change this, called NY Dream Act, but it hasn't passed - I graduated from a NY high school, so i got in-state tuition, but even that was hard to prove.

I would think it'd be easier for you to stay in NJ since you're already getting in-state tuition. If anything, the cost of living in NY is so much higher. And maybe now with DACA/SSN you can get some of the scholarships you couldn't before.

good luck!

Not everyone can get in-state tuition in California, first you have to had attended high school for 3 years in California, then had to graduated or received a GED from California, in other words you can't get any help in California unless you qualify
