I wouldn't keep your EAD with you because you're not gonna get questioned and if you lose it, have fun getting another one. If you're worried about being detained just bring your 821D letter

Thanks guys, feeling better about taking this leap. Guess I'll tell my friends to book the tickets then. Gah. Still nervous though.

Happyman0607, what's the 821D letter again?

You won't get any problem from TSA with a driver's license as long as it's still valid. All they care about is that the name on the boarding pass matches the name on the ID.

That's your approval letter for deferred action.

I flew from Tx to Cali with my sister and GF about 3 months ago, TSA looked at my ID and was cleared, my sister on the other hand was pulled aside by Border Patrol agents that were there and was asked questions. She had all her paper work and had no problems. On the was back from Cali. we just showed our IDs and no questions asked. My question is, why were there BP agents on Tx but not on cali? Is it because we are close to the border ?
And why not tell your friends about your status, Ive always seen this here. Common their your "friends". Well at least i do maybe because most of them are Latinos Hispanics and im not ashamed or scared to tell them that im not legally here.

Comes down to who you trust more. Yourself or your amigos back home to keep an eye on it. The amigos on my side of the family somehow "lost" a house title which was in a suitcase full of papers.

Texas is a big place. Anywhere within a 100 miles of the border is their jurisdiction. My lawyer had told me to completely avoid El-Paso - "Make sure the plane doesn't even land there", because if they WANTED TO, they can even board the plane and check like they do on buses. Airlines like Southwest land in a lot of places even when you don't have to change planes so if all it takes for you to feel good is to carry a letter or a card, I don't see why you wouldn't. I didn't know about that and in 2008, my plane did land in El Paso (though I had a valid state ID). I got lucky that time but luck has a way of running out so I won't ever make that mistake again.

You can call me paranoid like Happyman does, but what's better if you get pulled out of the line: A. Showing your EAD card and proving you have authorization to stay here and being on your way, or B. Sitting in a cold room, being questioned, missing your flight, and eventually your amigos back home fax over a copy of the card or FedEx it the next day while your life flashes in front of your eyes?

There's nothing to keep an eye on, it's not going to grow legs and run around. That's ridiculous to even consider unless you love with drooling idiots who would steal an EAD card. OP you're not going to get detailed bring a copy of your letter or card to be safe.. I honestly think even if you had nothing on you, you can just tell them your name and they'll pull you up in the system.. They're not gonna sit there interrogating you.. What the hell are they gonna ask? Where were you on June 15 2012? What were you wearing on that day? What was the weather like?

Iamanan overthinks this crap, I been through a BP checkpoint in an airport out of McAllen Texas the BP guy could give 2 shits it seemed like.

I went to Washington DC (from Cali) under DACA, and I even went inside the white house with my EAD. I didn't get deported; TSA didn't ask me for anything except an ID (I used my EAD as an ID).

What are they going to ask you? Something like "Are you a citizen?" Once your answer is no, then you might get the guy who's reaching the end of his shift and doesn't give two shits or you might get Hank Schrader who cares about his work. If you think your name is good enough then good luck with that. There are hundreds of Miguel Gutierrezes, Ajit Patels, Huang Nguyens, and Wu Chens in his system, some of whom are on a wanted list.

Is the paper good enough? Maybe...but anybody can copy that letter. The EAD card has a ton of hidden security marks. Do you really want to sit here and argue whether it makes sense to carry a .05 oz card with you? Your only argument so far is what if it gets lost...the counter argument is "what if you don't have it with you and you go to jail for a couple of days while it gets sorted out?" I like my side better.

Do you drive with your driver's license or do you leave that at home too? It's the same theory. You may never get pulled over. I know this dude who left his DL at home one day and nothing bad happened! I also know a dude who lost his DL. Is the conclusion that you're paranoid if you have your DL with you while you drive?
