That's a just a sales tactic. The old idea that you should buy a new car and sell it every 3 years is outdated and leasing scammers still use that number to give credibility to how big of a rip-off leasing is. If you buy a new car (which may or may not be a good option), you can expect to get 200k miles out of it now days easily. In most cases, I would argue that owning it will be better long term. Most people don't keep a car for just 3 years and it's closer to 10 years. If you buy a good low millage used car and own it for 10 years, you'd be far ahead in the long run.

http://www.nytimes.com/2013/09/21/yo...expensive.html has a good article with numbers and junk.

Let me first start this off by saying I scoped out craigslist for 4 months before I bought a car (when they announced daca till I got approved) you can scope out a good deal in about 1-2 weeks maybe 3 if you're unlucky (very unlikely though)
Ya will try Craigslist out.

Dang, wish I could be included in some kind of family insurance plan, stuck on my own...lol...

I wanted to avoid leasing because the payments for the car on top of the insurance may be too much? Yea, the renting is silly...but I didn't rent alot yet, just a couple of times...to practice driving and hanging out

Also, do you guys have tips on browsing Craigslist?

Should I just concentrate on the type of car and the mileage?

Is there ways to see what is a scam or not, I mean anyone can say anything...how do I know if its the truth? I doubt a test run in the car for 10 minutes would be much of a help...

It's not a sales tactic, obviously leasing is always more expencive than buying because you're essentially buying an item expected to depreciate a substantial amount in a short amount of time, no one leases looking to save money, it's a luxury of having a new car for not a new car price.. Obviously if you're tight on money you can can buy a $2,000 car and it'll be more than good enough but if you lease because you have enough disposable income then you can.. I personally don't lease, I bought my car full cash on the spot but I certainly don't think leasing is a rip off, it's just not something I'd do right now.

always look for by owners. Stay away from dealers if you're thinking of a used car.

It depends on the brand. Japanese cars , especially Toyota and Honda do well even above 100k miles. So I woulnt turn down those vehicles down. I don't trust American cars they beaks down way too fast imo. European cars are expensive to fix but drive nice. I don't know much about skorean car. Never owned one.

My first car was a Acura tl 2003 it was a great car until a friend crashed it. He gave me some money for damages but I just sold that and bought a newer but used tl 2006. Great car to drive. Decent mpg. Even after almost 10 years the 2004 looks great. I strongly recommend it. You're looking to spent anywhere from 9k-15k for a good one. Most people would rather take much and put a downpayment for a new car. Avoid salvagel / reconstructed titles like plague.

I agree with him on looking for cars that are on sale for owners and not buying cars that have a salvaged/reconstructed titles.

I would also meet in a public place. You don't want to meet in a dark alley and get jumped and get your cash stolen. If possible, you can take the car to a mechanic you trust and they can look it over before you buy it.

^ I don't think that's even an issue to consider.. You obviously don't bring cash with you when buying a used car, you bring maybe $100-300 to put down a deposit if you're serious about the car and pay the rest with a cashiers check.

Salvaged / Reconstructed title?

What is this?

Is this the wording used in the description? Is this something every seller must word somewhere in their selling topic?

I want to make sure I know where I am looking to see if it has titles like this, or whatever titles mean...lol...

As a seller, I would only take a money order. Sometimes with cash you can low ball even lower as people can be easily convience if they see cash obviously never go alone.

It means the car was crashed and was later fixed. You want to avoid these cars as even if they look good and all. It will have problems down the road. Ask for a carfsx or its vin. Also avoidn flooded vehicles
