Have any of you applied for a private student loan after getting your work authorization and SSN? I'm applying to several graduate schools, and I will eventually apply for private student loans, however I just wanted to see if anyone had any successes/failures already.

Thanks!

I've personally never tried this, but this has always looked semi "dreamer" friendly with a cosigner. If you look at the choices after clicking next, for citizenship you can choose "international with SSN or no SSN": https://www.studentloan.com/applicat..._undergrad.htm

I'm gonna check this out within the next month. There's a payment I have to make to my school, but I'm just a few thousand short (~$3000).

Do you have to have some credit history established prior to applying to any of these semi-dreamer-friendly loans? Or do they look at the co-signer's credit history?

I've never taken out a loan, and I don't have a credit card at the moment.

That's great news! Sorry to resurrect this thread, but it is important information for quite a few people. So it seems like we now have access to at least some private student loans, which is awesome.

I will be re-applying for a new loan for my last semester in November. I have provided some information to certain people about how to get Sallie Mae International Student Loan but it seems they were having issues.

Has anybody have been able to get a loan with Sallie Mae other than me?

while you were doing the loan process, did you discover or find out how much we can barrow with a co-signer?

im looking at graduate schools too but i feel like i would need more than $10,000, like perhaps $50,000.

Also do you know how much they charge in interest?

I do not know what is the maximum you can get. I want to say $40,000 but I may wrong. The interest rate was around 11%. You can always contact Sallie Mae and ask.

Just my two cents, but why don't you apply for funding or have a professor pay for your tuition?

Don't take it the hard way but I was told by a professor that you should never pay for a graduate degree, and if you are it may be that you do not belong there. It may be a different case for you.

Good luck.

I got a 10k loan with 11% rate. The rate is like that because we are treated as international students. The 40k is what I think is the maximum you can take out.
