SSA won't accept DL

Hey guys,

I went to my local SSA office today to apply for an SSN. I took my EAD and my DL. They said it was not sufficient. They told me I needed passport or birth certificate to prove I was born overseas. I was so upset cause I waited almost 2 hours there just to be turned down by some dumbass. I tried to tell the supervisor that DL is on the list for acceptable documents for DACA approved individuals applying for SSN. He refused to accept my DL and told me to come back with my passport or birth certificate. My passport is expired and I do not have my birth certificate, I lost it when I was moving.

Any advice?

I thought they were suppose to accept EAD and US issued DL. Im so confused.... Help please.

How could you get a DL with out a valid SSN#?

Take your expired! Why didn't you show it to begin with? Show all you got whenever you go there. When I went I used both my passports, the expired and current one but they looked at the expired one.

I got my permit when I was 17 and got my DL soon after. They didn't have REAL ID Act effective in MD until 2012.

I didn't have my expired passport w/ me because I thought U.S. DL and EAD would be sufficient.

They shouldn't have turned me down in the first place though. That document released by SSA for DACA recipients states DL is good with the EAD to apply for a SSN. Smh!

And I tried to explain it to the supervisor but he kept saying my DL doesn't prove my country of birth.

find a different SSA office, i only showed my EAD, and that was it

A DL doesn't prove where u where born, it's just am ID

I went with just my DL and EAD, as I only had an expired passport w/ outdated info.. I wasn't asked any questions, they accepted it w no issues.

I'd also recommend trying to go to a different one, and if you can't try going on a different day/time to maybe get a different supervisor. Oh and print & take one of these.. Good luck!

But the EAD does, in a very specific line that says "Country of Birth"
Seriously how do these people do their job. If that doesn't prove country of birth I dont know what does..

I went into a different office yesterday and took my expired passport, DL with the EAD. The lady was really friendly and took my passport as an evidence for citizenship even though it was expired. I got a letter saying I should get the SSC w/in 2 weeks.

I can understand why they want a passport or birth certificate though. In many states you're required to show proof of SSN to get DL. If you're getting SSN with DL, it's kinda chicken and egg situation.
