Like many of you here, I received a letter from the California DMV earlier today. At first, I thought the letter had something to do with my current red light camera ticket I received some short while ago; however, it turned out to be a new DL with an expiration date set for late 2014, rather than my initial expiration date set for 2017.

Of course, this was a tad disappointing, but I understand that initially the DL could not exceed the date on our EAD card. I called the number on the letter and spoke to a women that stated I can renew my DL with proper documentation proving the renewal for my permit to stay within the country, and if I fax any information prior to my 2014 expiration date that I would not need to pay for a new DL, because the renewal would be within my initial 2017 expiration date.

This prompts me to wonder about the renewal process for our EAD's and DACA applications. Does anyone have information to this regard? When will renewal applications for us be available and by when should we file?

As far as the DL's are concerned, I plan on keeping the "valid" DL in my car's glove compartment at all time and just carry the other one with me when I go to bars or out to 21+ events. I cannot bring myself to destroy this little piece of plastic that makes me feel normal. Because to me it's more than just plastic; it's a symbol that I too belong.

I hope this one will be five years again instead of one year and a couple months.
I actually got my driver's license in 2004 with visa but no ssn and renewed my driver license in 2008 with my new ssn w/o letting them know what status I have and got a five year dl. Now I renewed again online with my ssn and still get five year dl even after I got daca, but I think dmv never knew what status I have and kept on letting me renew for five years

It would have to be at least 6 months before your EAD expires and no, sadly, there have yet to be any real guidelines as to how the renewal process will go like. Quite honestly, it seems they really don't know what to do with us. However, there is a slight slight very very small slight chance - DACA might be turn into a more permanent status. Maybe a bill is introduced that moves DACA into some kind of conditional PR status -it makes sense to just do that seeing how the initial application progress is already done . But its really anyone's guess

What letter?

Is it the one that says your DL/ID card "may have been issued in error" and that you have to reply within 60 days?

If so, call the Legal Presence unit at (916) 657-7445 to verify if they have received your letter with the copies of your Employment Authorization Card. Hopefully you made front and back copies of your Employment Authorization Card. They need both sides.

Can those of you who got the new license with the correct expiration check what the status of your license returns?
