Hello everyone. Just wanted to share my story and hopefully get advice. So I am trying to purchase a new vehicle. Trying to get financed through Credit Union since they typically have lower rates than dealers. I contact Bellco local Credit Union in CO. We went through the whole application and at the end she asks if I am CITIZEN or RESIDENT I say neither. I say I am authorized to work in the US but she says because of that they cannot approve my loan. Not sure if I should just go to another Credit Union or what to do at this point. Any help will be much appreciated. THANKS!!

I've always wondered this too...
By standard definition I believe we are legal residents. By USCIS definition I don't think we are.
Maybe you should've said you were a Resident....because technically you are.

Can someone confirm this?
For bank/school/other we are legal residents.
For immigration we are aliens authorized to work in the US.

I think being from Texas makes it a bit easier. It would be interesting to see if he applies at any other place and is approved.

I am going tonight to another credit union and see what they say. If anything what I found to be weird is my wife is a Legal Resident and I said well she can apply and I can be as cosign they still said no. I then told them well you know money is not an issue so what really is the problem. I showed them proof of 5k monthly income. But we will see at another one and will let you guys know. Or I might just drive down to TX and come back LOL

I think it may be a question specific to that CU. For example, Wells Fargo only gives unsecured credit cards to permanent residents or citizens. They denied my application solely for that reason. Other banking institutions don't care about your immigration status so long as you have work authorization. Try another CU.

BTW... im assuming you will be using AP (advance parole) soon? spouses of LPR waiting list is the shortest it has ever been... The credit union were i bank gave my dad a letter approving him for $20k for an auto loan and all he has is an ITIN so yeah either the credit unions down here are super relax or that credit union you went to was just super picky..

No need for Advance Parole. We are in the process of submitting for her Citizenship and then for my LPR. I came here when I was 2 with a visa so an overstay. One of the many things I can say thanks to my mom for doing it right
