I have both the iPad mini and Kindle Fire HD. Definitely go with the iPad mini. I never knew how great it felt until I picked it up. I also had the iPad 2 and that thing is a pain to hold with one hand. I actually dropped it on my face once while reading in bed and ended up giving it away. I bought the 4G version for my iPad mini because for iPad 2 I went with the 64gb. BIG MISTAKE. I never use the 4G on it and wish I would've gotten the bigger storage like I did with the iPad 2. Kindle Fire? I'm not too sure about the HDX version but if it's anything like the original HD it's a pain in the butt to use. Lags, freezing, and no multitasking is the norm. I haven't owned an Android tablet but I have an Android phone and I really like it. I've had both iPhone and Android phone and flip flop each year. I definitely like the customization on Android. My favorite feature on my phone is that I can deactivate the bloatware AND hide it so I don't have to see it in my app drawer. I'm not sure if it's a samsung feature though.

If I had to buy again, I'd pick the Nexus 7.

I've never owned a tablet because I really don't need one but Google Nexus devices are legit. I've had a Nexus 5 phone and it's beyond anything I had with Samsung. I really hope that Google doesn't discontinue it. You pretty much get a high-end machine with a little less flashy outside but it's pure googliness. You don't have to wait for the manufacturer to offer updates because it's from Google.

Having said that, the iPad is probably easier to use and has the coolness factor.

Windows 8 tablet is pretty good. I'm using Asus T100. It has a detachable keyboard, would be a tablet or PC. It comes with Microsoft Office 2013. You can use it for work, school or just entertainment device.

I think the Microsoft Surface Pro will fit the bill you can buy the 64GB edition, Refurb, 1 Yr Warranty for $399 via Ebay. Or if you're on a budget the Surface RT will do fine specially for school work (comes with office 2013 out of the box) fun tablet for 170.00 or so depends where you buy it.
