Hello everyone,

First, I would like to say a huge "Thank You" to lizs0517 for starting this thread. It was a huge help to me while I was preparing my documents and made my trip a lot less stressful.

I noticed that a lot of the threads have discussed people leaving for humanitarian reasons, but I thought I would share my experience as I traveled under "educational/work related" reasons in case there are others wondering.

I'm a graduate student in a science program, and I had the opportunity to present my research abroad. I applied for AP for "educational/work" reasons as conferences count towards work, and education because I'm in school.

I received my AP document in 35 days, but I think that had more to do with the time of year that I applied, so I think one should still allow 90 days for approval.

In addition to the required documents, here is what I included in my application:

Letters Of Necessity For Conference Requirement & Participation:

* A letter from my adviser on how important it was for me to present my research at this conference because of how prestigious it was, how it would benefit my education because of various networking opportunities, and the feedback I would receive on my research to then further my project.

* A letter from the graduate dean explaining how research presentation was an integral part of the graduate program and how I would be representing my school to highlight our research program.

Letter Of Proof For Conference Participation

Letter Of University Appointment In Graduate Program

Letter of Support For Conference Attendance-Someone from the conference to explain how important and influential the conference was.

I'm sure it was more documents than was necessary, but I figured it was better this way.

A couple things to keep in mind just in case:

*Leave plenty of days prior to your departure, just in case you find that you need to leave early

*Leave plenty of days after the day you plan to return to the U.S. just in case you fall ill, there are plane delays, or some sort of natural disaster while you are away and you can't get back into the country.

Arriving to the destination was easy, as I was going to the country that issued my passport.

On my way back however, I had to stop by Heathrow airport to board my plane to the US. When I got to the agent, they asked me where my ESTA (spelling?) visa was.

She wasn't aware of EAD cards, so she had to ask a second person, who then called immigration. I showed them my EAD card and AP document. They checked the expiration date, saw that it was valid, and gave me a second security sticker on the back of my passport.

When I arrived back in the US, my port of entry was Dallas. They were super friendly, and knew how to handle my paperwork. Customs gave me approval, and then I went into the second room for ICE where I had to wait for my AP documents to be stamped. They kept one copy and gave the other to me and sent me on my way. (A huge thank you to those that said to travel with both AP documents). I was in the waiting room for about 20 minutes. Immigration didn't ask me any questions. However, when customs took my EAD and AP form, I had included the letter from my adviser that I had put in my original application, stating that I was working in the graduate program just in case.

Upon my return to the US, I was also advised to print out a back up copy of my I-94 from here: https://i94.cbp.dhs.gov/I94/request.html.

I hope this helps anyone who would like to travel for work and educational purposes and I'm happy to answer any questions about my experience.

Hi everyone,

I'm a daca recipient
I was approved last year on 5/20/2013

This year I decided to apply for advance parole on humanitarian reason (maternal grandma is ill and two years ago my paternal grandpa passed away and I don't want the same story to repeat; me not being able to see her again) but I have gone to two different lawyers and one said that is should be fine to apply and he other said that is was kind of dumb to leave that I was going to be ban from coming back. After reading on post on this site I chose to apply for ap since I'm a daca recipient and I'm also married to a us citizen. And to be honest I don't want to be in the limbo of wether they keep renewing daca which they have this year but then in two more years in unknown.

This is what I have so far...
I gather all document from doctors and prescriptions she takes every day so basically all her medical records
Birth certificates (moms, grandmas and mine) translated
My lawyer made me a letter stating that my grandma took care of me while my mom worked during my childhood and I was real attached to her like she was my mother. Also that grandpa passed away and I was not able to see him and I did not want this to happen again now with grandma.
Got everything translated and sent them on 5/13/14
Immigration received it on 5/18/2014
On 5/22/2014 they cashed the check
On 6/27/2014 I got approved
Now I'm on post decision activity and I'm waiting on card production. Hopefully by July 10 I will receive it because I have ask for vacation at work.
On 7/7/2014 got it on the mail
It will expire on 8/8/2014
On 7/14/14 BACK IN THE U.S NO PROBLEM!!! Thru land port @ laredo port of entry..
Got to inspection and ask me if we all my family were us citizens.. Just told him that they were and hat I had a work permit and a ADVACE PAROLE document then he ask my wife what was her relation with me (husband) then for how long ( one year).
Went on the computer and check my tags and said that my Georgia tag looks like Colorado state tag, but I only had one tag as that's how it's in Georgia. Told me to go in and leave my wife in the car because I had to in and get my ADVANCE PAROLE stamped and told me like 5 times to DO NOT leave without you who sleep (I-94). Another officer just told me if I was on my way to Georgia and said on that my i94 was only valid for one day. Have a safe trip!! And all done

Please if you have the same question on wether you apply or not I recommend to do so because everyone is being negating about traveling with ap... I'll keep posting as soon I receive the letter and I travel to Mexico.

That's amazing. Much nicer than stories I've heard from California ports of entry. Congratulations on your AOS too! Please update us when you get your green card.

If you or someone you know plans on getting AP, I would recommend going through LAX. My wife got AP this past September and our lawyer recommended leaving from a "big name" airport since their employees would be more up to date with immigration laws. We decided to travel to Mexico through LAX and everything went as planned with no issues.

My biggest fear in doing this is the fact that I have accrued a few years of unlawful presence before DACA happened and I didn't know if that'll be a problem for me in re-entering the US. I haven't read every account in this thread, but I'm guessing it is not a problem...

Hello everybody.
I want to tell everybody how my case ended up. As i said before in my first post i was going back to Peru to visit my grandmother who was sick by the time i started my case (AP) but she passed away during the process of case.

Based on my advanced parole letter i should be back before july 29th.

Well i travel to Peru on june 25th with no problems at all.
I got back on july 27th. I wil try to explain all the steps i did on my way back to USA ONLY.
Once i arrived to the airport at Lima - Peru and spoke the airline clrek they asked me for my passport and as they couldnt see my visa in my passport he asked me for my green card and i told him. I dont have a green card but i have a letter (advance parole) they did not know what that was, so he called a supervisor and he started reading the letter i showed him my driver license. He told the clerk it was good. They made a copy of the letter. Afrer that, all i have to do was get on the plane !
Once i got to Miami i went to passport control. And showed them my passport my us custom form and my 2 letter of (ap) the officer did not say a word. He called another officer, gave him all my documents and asked me to follow him. I was taking to US CUSTOM AND BORDER CONTROL OFFICE it was a private area. I was not the only in that room there couple of people waiting.
Some people were called out and they were interviewed at the windows. I was sitting close the windows so it wasnt hard for me to listen to them. They asked them many questions, but they sound like they just wanted to know why they wanted to be in the country and if they were telling the truth.
I waited about 30 minutes before my name was called out. I approched to the window and the officer asked. Where i was going to, i told him i was going back to North Carolina. At this point i was ready to show all my documents and the documents from my grandmothers death. The officer handed me back my passport my US custom form and one AP Letter which was sealed then he said thank you. You can go to claim your bag and have a nice trip to north carolina. I was not asked any other question other than where i was going to.
I do not know if this is normal but this is what i went tru. I left the office i had a question on my mind. Since i'm waiting for my green card because my mother is citizen i know it might take sometime. If i need to travel again do i have to wait some time i order to re aplly for another AP? I asked that question to another officer and he said i was paroled for a year but if i need to travel outwide the US i need to re apply for AP. Can somebody explain me what being paroled for a year means? I still dont understand. Thank you!

You have DACA ?

If so you dont have to be married to apply for advanced parole.
You need certified letter from the doctor that your father is visiting. Make sure he specify evetything .
You also need your birth certificate ( to proof the relationship) make sure it has the apostille sealed. You send the copies they dont need the originals.
You need copies of your daca letter showing you were approved.
Copy of your driver license, social security, and work permit.

Make sure to translate everything that is not in english. And make copy of everything. I would recomend a front letter explaining why you want to travel or explain something you can explain in the application form.

You dont have to be married to USC or anywhere closed to adjusting your status to apply for AP on the other hand, once your son turns 21 you will be able to adjust.
