The easiest thing to do would be to apply for a secured credit card through your bank. That means that you give the bank some amount of money as collateral. In the event that you can't pay your credit card bill, they will use that collateral to pay your debt.

Once you prove to them that you're responsible with your credit, the bank can upgrade you to an unsecured credit card and return your collateral deposit.

After getting rejected by CapitalOne twice and by Wells Fargo's regular credit card once, I tried for WF's secured card with a $300 collateral. I used it to pay for my cell phone bill, my internet, and other small purchases. I paid the bills in full, never even considering to just pay the minimum. I tried my best to keep my credit utilization under 30%.

Around 5 or 6 months later, I was upgraded to a regular credit card. I asked to raise my credit limit to $1,000, but they only approved me for $600. By the end of the year, I'll ask again.

I know! I had now idea how bad that would be though but at least now I can start building my credit and recovering. But it wasn't too bad, my credit score is 716 which isn't awful so I guess it worked out.

Discover has approved TONS of dreamers that have recently gotten their SSN, have you tried calling the CreditCard reconsideration lines? Discover actually called me and wanted to verify a couple of stuff with me before approving me. I later applied for a Secured card and was denied, which was a shock since it as a Secured Card, but I called the reconsideration line, and after speaking to an agent I was approved. This also happened with AMEX. I now have 3 credit cards which took reconsideration after I applied.

Here is my Discover CASHBACK bonus link, when anyone applies and get approved they will receive a $50 cashback bonus, as will I the next statement, which is GREAT to pay off a couple of transactions when you first get started. Not to mention the cashback from all the day to day purchases.

GOOD LUCK!

You can also call Discover to find out. Sometimes calling them is faster than waiting for email or letter. You will definitely get approved! Once you get approved, use it for 3 months as much as you can and then apply for other credit cards.. I personally did:
1. Capital One Secured card.
2. Capital One Credit card.
3. Discover
4. Citi Thank You (I've been banking with them for past 10 years but for some reason they didn't approve for CC when I applied after I got my SSN but after having 3 CC they approved it)
5. Chase Sapphire

Good luck!!

Wouldn't you get a decision under 60 seconds if you are applying online? Its always faster and easier that I way I thought. I have 4 credit cards (one is a business one), and always applied online within instance approval.

I feel you! I have searching for the best credit card deal but with all of the recent credit card security issues I have been seeing on the news, I still left undecided. However, the CFPB has released a new study about credit history. It found, among other things, that charge card activity is the single most significant element analyzed by credit reporting agencies when determining credit history.

Apply for capital one bank .. Request for the secure credit card. I think is $25 or $50 to open an account . After a couple months they will send you a pre-aprove credit card . Capital is great to start building credit .
