I think we all pay SS and Medicare. Im leaving it as it is who knows if we ever have a chance to become residents we might end up paying all that money back.

I also get that taken out of my paycheck. I didn't think we had a choice in the matter.

I would like to know this as well. It is my understanding that since we now have social security numbers, we'll be able to benefit from our contributions come retirement time. I always wondered what happens to those that decide to move to a different country - can you "close out" your ss account?

Doesn't say anything about us :/

I was also given a choice, but I advise us all to be careful when deciding if we pay social security and medicare. Since we aren't legal residents banks and other companies that report to the IRS may offer us the opportunity to sign a exempt form. In their eyes "we" are international visitors who are authorized to work here. I was offered the exempt form by two separate banks. I passed both times, because most people who are trying and hoping to adjust their status don't take it. I am not saying this can hurt you later down the line. Just keep in mind, if things work out in our favor, and we all become legal down the line, it will help that we have already started to contribute towards social security.

I know that you can close out 401k accounts early if you move to another country, not sure about SS

Check out this booklet that might answer your question. I didn't have time to read all of it but it seems to discuss issues like this.

13% is really not that much, my withholding will be 24% for Federal, SS , and Medicare taxes alone...not looking forward to it at all

I've been paying into SS and Medicare on all my paycheck jobs. Like Sorrybrah said, I figure that doing so will either help or do nothing for me in the long run. It wouldn't hurt me.

It would hurt if we're not able to receive SS benefits after paying for all these years
