Hi guys, I have a very important question to ask but before I do let me just tell you about my situation.

My brother is a dreamer too, he has good credit and recently last month he just bought a new car. He was lucky to be able to take out the car without a co-signer since his credit is very young but good..he got his good credit in less than a year.

I have no credit, but I wanted a new car, but my dad was going to be my co-signer because he has great credit. So we went and bought the car and I was so happy to have a brand new car. Two weeks after I bought my car, the finance guy from the dealer called me and was telling me that the bank who was financing my car was having problems registering my social security number. I ask them what was wrong, and he said he had no idea why CHASE bank was having problems with my ss# ......then hours later he calls again saying that he wanted to know if I was legal in the country or not and I was like "really?!!" I told him that yes I'm legal to work because of deferred action. Then he asked me if my dad was legal, and I said no but he has great credit. I was so mad that they were asking all this, and even though I had the right to say nothing about my legal status, I went ahead and answered their questions because according to him they wanted to know in order to find a way to have the bank accept me. So I'm like "ok". Next he asked me to send him a copy of my ss# and a copy of my deferred action acceptance letter or any other proff of me having a permit to work by deferred action.

So my question to you guys is, would it be ok to send them a copy of my deferred action acceptance letter? Am I risking something? What would be the worst thing to ever happen if I send them that? Am I risking it to have my identity stolen somehow? I'm so confused guys..if anything I think I should just send them a copy of my deferred action ID and that's it...they never gave my brother any problems and it's the same dealer!! I live in the state of Illinois in the suburbs of Chicago... can someone help me has anyone gone through something similar before? I never knew you need to prove a damn dealer you are legal in order to buy a car!!

I also live in IL. I purchased a new car 6 months ago and did not have to go through the whole are you legal questions. My credit isn't excellent and I did not have a co-signer. Maybe it's just the specific bank.

I'm sure others will chime in. But me personally, I wouldn't send them that kind of info. I would take the car back and look for another dealer or bank. Maybe once they see your willing to return the car back they willl work with you. After all they don't want to lose on a sale.

I had a similar situation were they asked me for a copy of my SS and once they received that and saw the red "authorized for work only with.." They asked me for "Visa or other documents" to show I was "legal" ... Thought the dealership never harassed me or asked any direct questions..
I went ahead and sent them a copy of my approval letter to show legal presence that was it. It allowed me to keep my New 2014 Honda and they kept me financed at 0.9% with a credit history of less than 1 year so I'm ok with that.

I don't see how your identity could be stolen from the approval letter.. I mean if they really wanted to, they already have your SS number, license, addresses, credit background, etc..

First thing we must understand. Do not start explaining all the details about "DACA" to people. It will only serve to confuse them and make them think you're under some temporary weird immigration status. If you're asked for proof of legal presence, send them your EAD. That is all. A work permit is proof of legal status. Secondly, the problem here is that BANKS like Chase, BOA, Wells Fargo etc etc DO NOT extend auto loans to us. We are eligible for loans from federal credit unions only. Give the dealer your SS and EAD and tell him you're interested only if you're getting a loan from a credit union or else you're taking your business somewhere else. Do not touch your deferred action letter. Keep it where it is and never look at it ever again. Nobody needs it.

Im in California, Orange county. I had the same experience...The ones that wanted the information were the companies helping with credit. Capital One is the one that approved me.
I have OK credit...

Also remember to send copies not the original.

What is your interest rate? I am looking to maybe buy a BWM (and that is a big maybe) - an older model maybe 2 to 4 years old. but I don't want to pay much interest.
