You don't have to, you can just do it yourself. All you need is to fill out the I-821, I-765 & 1-765WS applications then pay $465 with a check or money order to the US department of homeland security and that's it. I did my first application and renewal all by myself ^.^ I was 17 now I'm 19.

You don't have to get a lawyer, however, I can understand why some people don't feel comfortable filling out paperwork, no matter how simple. It can be confusing and a peace of mind is definitely more valuable than a couple of hundred dollars (at least for me, anyway)! All areas are different and I would say check with different lawyers or organizations in your area that can help you out with that. Good luck!

IF you don't have a record, don't get a lawyer. The app is super easy. In fact if you want I can help you out or anyone here can. I takes literally less than an hour..filling it out proof reading and so. You will save yourselves 500-1,000 dollars. And also some of these lawyers handle a lot of cases at once and I wouldn't be surprised if some paralegal fills yours out.

I would fill out the forms yourself and have a lawyer proof it. I wouldn't pay more than $150 for that.
