I did a walk in, with an appointment you can be in and out during a lunch hour. You're telling me that getting a legitimate ID renewed is not worth taking an hour off from work? I don't know how much you make, but $200 is not anywhere worth having an expired license and potential for more issues.

Enough with this bullshit about eye exams... jesus christ, you're not supposed to drive in the first place if this is an issue. If someone is dodging an eye exam for a DL renewal, then they need to just get an ID instead.

Took months for the DL receipt? They told me in person 2 weeks at most and gave me a temporary DL on the spot that's good for 60 days, tell me how that's a worse option than letting your DL expire and waiting on the mail in to be processed, with no status updates.
Did you have to retake the written test or anything? I want to know so I can study for it again. And did you have to retake your picture? I'd like to keep my old picture if I can because I look like a stud in it, haha

No retest of any kind, there wasn't even a fee. They did take a new picture though.

At the counter, I also phrased as such: "I have a limited term DL and need to show proof of (legal) residence to lift the hold", as opposed to situating like you're renewing something.

Remember that the original is supposed to be good for 4 years, so the 2 year limited term is solely dependent on the legal presence, not anything else i.e. written exam or driving tests.

Ah damn... can't possibly top such a good looking pic now.

What you say makes sense, but someone earlier in the thread said they were told they would have to retake the written test and the vision test.

^lol @ pic.

I don't know the details of others, but I can only assume that could happen if you walk in and outright say "I need to renew my DL", and the not always trained DMV employees will gladly put you through the entire process again. It could also depend on per state regs.

Originally, I had decided to send in the renewal by mail, but seeing as my ID/DL expire on the 15th, I decided to go in today to get the ID renewed at least. I told them I had already sent in the letter(i had a copy of the original), but the lady there had me fill out an application anyways. She had me do the vision test, took my picture, and gave me my interim DL. As for the ID, it stated that I needed to pay the 28$ renewal. She said it wasn't right and got her supervisor to override the fee, since it wasn't for a full term. Aside from an hour of my time, it cost me nothing to do both.

Same happened with my DL renewal...i made an appoinment at 8am and went directly to the window and they made me fill out the application again, do the vision test and get a new picture taken before giving me my Interim License

Is this true for everyone? I got my DL right after getting approved in 2012 and it is good through 2017. I have yet to receive anything from the DMV.

What dmv did you go to? I tried to renew my ID in The new Fontana office and the superviser told me since I have my id thru EAD I will need to pay every time, but I had gone in Rancho and was told that I didn't need to pay to renew my id since I had payed the first time around so confusing

I got my new driver license thru mail. No fee. I just sent a copy of my new ead and the process took about a month. The new license has the same expiration as my new ead.
