Living together is not a requirement. You will need to provide evidence that your marriage is in good faith and not solely for immigration purposes. Obviously that society expect a married couple to live together but everyone's situation is different. Most officer's will review your file more closely if you have very little evidence of your relationship and on top of that you dont live together.

You dont have to wait till 2017 to do it, but in my experience we have had very traditional hispanic couples who have not lived together and get married to adjust status, so it does exist but like i mentioned before you will have to have overwhelming evidence of your relationship to overcome the fact that you guys dont live together.

You can still get married this summer even if you don't plan on living together. I just wouldn't recommend filing the petition until after you live together.
