Can you guys help me with something?

I'm in highschool and I"m going to be doing a medical assistant internship in the spring and I know that if they like me they'll pay me,but Idk i don't have an ssn so... isthere anyway around it? like if they hire me as a medical assistant? what can I do? can they sponsor me? I'm not 18 yet, well Idk I just don't know what i'll tell them if they decide they want to hire me

I dont know ur personal situation or how long u have been here but right now the dream act is the best way to get around it so make phone calls to the senators everyday so that it will be passed and u will have a ssn if u dont have long distance use the capitol switch board number which is 18008280498 they will transfer u over for free.

I don't know about the sponsorship thing it depends on the company, but then again, you are taking that risk, of informing them that you are undocumented. You would absolutely not be able to work without an SSN, except if they told you it was an "under the table job" meaning on a cash basis. Sponsoring is very common especially in the medical field, so if you trust them as a company, that you would actually inform them about your legal status, that choice is on you. but to be honest, i would not do it, if i did not feel comfortable. I know it seems like a missed opportunity, for a job, but dude, welcome to the club, i think almost everyone on this forum, has been offered a job, and they had to decline it because we don't have a SSN. Thats why the passing of the Dream Act this Sept. is very important.

if i was in your situation, and they had offered to pay me, i'd probably tell them the truth and say that because of that, i can't accept to get paid. Though i'd still do the internship.

I really wanted to do an intership but after weeks of research I found out that I was unable. My school policy was that unless it was a requirement for my degree, I couln't do it. You have to check your school stand but definetly, you cannot get paid.

Haute, I'm sorry to say but you cannot legitimately get paid for the internship. I'm not sure of the exact USCIS regulations but internships are tricky in terms of determining valid employment. However, paid internships generally count as compensated employment and undocumented workers are not authorized to have compensated employment. The USCIS has their own standards of compensated employment. After all, you cannot receive wages but get reimbursed for other expenses such as travel or food which is also a type of compensation.

In your case, I doubt the hospital has additional compensation arrangements for interns. If the only compensation you receive is your salary, then you can always ask to be not paid. For now, I recommend doing the internship as unpaid, which would be like volunteer work and not legal, compensated employment. You can explain this to the hospital and see if they would allow you to work as an unpaid volunteer. If they allow you, then I don't think they'll make a big deal out of not having a SSN. If they do, there is very little you can do.

There is very little risk in explaining your situation upfront to the hospital. The worst they can do is not offer you the internship but it is very unlikely that they'll report you to the USCIS or ICE. However, I am not a lawyer so don't take my word for it. It is better to be honest and truthful with the hospital now rather than taking the job and risk them discovering your status. The consequences may or may not be harsher then.

After all, hospitals also run on a budget and they like to have low wage labor too.

I was reading about the H1b visas and my mom could've benefited from that she would've had her green card already. it's so stupid because my parents didn't even look up this info b4 coming here, they came here w/ a tourist visa instead of a h1b

If you don't have a SSN then a company would have to do a lot to hire you. They would have to file a labor certification stating that no US citizen is as qualified as you for a job. Once that is approved you still have to wait until a bill is passed to "forgive" you for your overstay. A bill similar to the 245i. People have been waiting for many years for an extension of 245i but to no avail. Your best hope now is DREAM.

Make friends it's not WHAT you know its WHO you know, maintain a confident attitude. So the owner agreed to work around it, i sent her a thank you note- now she loves me!
