Hi so im not working at a big four, but seeing it that you guys have the most in common with me i would love your opinion. Like everyone else here i am a DACA recipient, additionally i am a CPA in New York. Well here is my dilemma that i hope someone can give me some advice, guidance, or share there story. I work for a company thats upward of 300 million in revenue, i am the assistant controller there but education and my cpa certifiction is irrelevant. The owners do not really care for any of that, additionally they promoted a bookkeeper that has been there for 5 years to become controller so this has become a dead end for me, sort of. Currently im making 65k and im considering leaving. Now i considered entering public accounting but i cant see myself taking a pay cut. So several questions, if i do go into public, can i ask for 70k? Is it worth going into public? Im really curious to hear others experience, your story, anything you can share. This is the first place im at that has a similiar story to me. Pleasure to meet you all.

First of all, Congrats. You are indeed an accomplished individual. And definitely, you should never look for any salary less than what you're getting currently. I've worked in Public Accounting, but only small individually owned CPA firms, no big 4 experience. I certainly think you should explore into regional/big 4 firms and you will definitely be eligible for upwards of 65K since you're not entry level any more. You're a damn CPA! That is big news. And obviously, I don't have to tell you but in those big public accounting firms, the hours are long and crazy but hey if you're a young guy, you'll enjoy it. Also, if it interest you, you can look into state government jobs. They are great!

With DACA, I was able to graduate college and go into consulting. I now make six figures and have had two promotions already. I have an invaluable role in my company as I post the highest billables out of all our employees. I want to get my story out there.

As an Assistant Controller, you should be making six figures. You should leave and move to a bigger company.

You can move to a Big 4, but understand that you wouldn't be making significantly more, and the work will be different. Auditing is different than going through the month-end close processes, recording/posting journal entries. You have to adjust your mindset, and you're likely going to be working more hours for relatively the same pay. Is that worth it?

I say since you've got this Assistant Controller title, why not look for a Controller position at a larger company and then move your way up to executive management?

ALSO: Can anyone help me get out of public accounting and into IB? I have a finance degree (non-target school), graduated summa cum laude, and a CPA in California (passed all exams on 1st try within a year).

I know how the financial statements work and flow into each other. I'm highly rated at my Big 4 firm. I know how to work with financial models. With a little help, I can learn really quickly how to build one from scratch. I'm good with Excel -- minimal mouse use.

I know the basic valuation concepts like DCF, equity multiple, IRR, NPV, etc. Currently working my way through Investment Banking by Rosenbaum and Pearl to teach myself after I come home from work.

HELP! I really wanna leave public accounting T_T I don't care about working long hours; I care about being paid $$$$ for the hours I spend at work.

Hi everyone! I'm a Big 4, CPA consultant here.

How have you guys approached dealing with HR and your team about your situation? I live in California so people are much more liberal and open to immigration here...but it's still an uncomfortable situation to bring up.

Hi Peachy,

I was able to speak to my manager and senior manager. I wanted to get my story out there and not be afraid to speak to my employers about this. Given that Deloitte is such a big firm I figured a solution would be to be transferred to a member-firm outside of the US. I don't know how sponsorship for a GC would work because I just joined the firm less than 2 months ago. This Trump win has completed freaked me out about what's yet to come and I was happy I was able to speak to people about it. Both of them were super supporting and even encouraged me to tell as many people as possible about my situation because you never know how and who will end up helping in the end.

I also spoke to the law-firm that works directly with Deloitte and HR. I got vague-ish responses because there's not much that can be done with my situation at the moment.

Were you able to speak to anyone from HR about your situation?

Hi Vivace, just curious, you seem super qualified and very intelligent, but aren't you worried about what will happen once Trump takes office? What are your plans???
